A faded, chalky convertible top doesn't just look bad — it tells the whole world that a car hasn't been maintained. The good news: most faded canvas and vinyl convertible tops can be restored to a deep, rich black in under 30 minutes.
Doc Bailey's Leather Black isn't just for leather. The same lanolin-based formula that restores black leather works on canvas, vinyl, and rubber — and it's one of the most popular solutions for convertible top restoration.
WORKS ON:
- Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator soft tops
- Corvette convertible tops (C3 through C8)
- Mustang convertible tops
- Miata / MX-5 convertible tops
- Any vinyl, canvas, or fabric convertible top that has faded or become chalky
STEP-BY-STEP: HOW TO RESTORE YOUR CONVERTIBLE TOP
Step 1: Clean the top
Rinse the top with water to remove loose dirt. For stubborn dirt or mildew, scrub gently with a soft brush and rinse thoroughly. Allow to dry completely before applying Leather Black.
Step 2: Apply Leather Black
Apply Leather Black directly to a clean cloth or soft brush — do not apply directly to the top. Work the product into the canvas or vinyl in sections, using circular motions. The formula will immediately restore deep black color.
Step 3: Work in sections
Work across the top in manageable sections (front panel, rear panel, etc.) rather than trying to do the entire top at once. This prevents the product from drying before it can be worked in.
Step 4: Buff and allow to dry
Use a clean, dry cloth to buff off any excess. Allow to dry for 20-30 minutes before raising or lowering the top.
Step 5: Second application (optional)
For heavily faded or chalky tops, a second application immediately after the first produces a noticeably deeper, more uniform result.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
Immediate improvement on most faded tops. Tops that have turned gray or white from chalking may require 2-3 applications for full restoration. The waterproofing agents in the formula will also restore water-beading capability to tops that have lost their water resistance.
HOW OFTEN TO TREAT:
For a convertible that is garaged: 1-2 times per year.
For a convertible parked outside: Every 3-4 months. UV exposure is relentless on black canvas.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Q: Will this work on a gray or tan convertible top?
A: For non-black tops, use Leather Clear instead of Leather Black. Leather Clear conditions and protects canvas and vinyl without altering the color.
