The lanolin oil soaks deep into the hide to soften and moisturize it, so it stays supple and does not dry out, crack, or lose its color. Then the wax sets on the surface to protect it, repel water, and shield the stitching against stitch-rot, the first place leather fails.

Why saddles get moldy in the barn, and how to stop it

Mold does not grow on leather. It grows on what is fed to the leather. Traditional conditioners are built on animal body fats like mink oil, and animal fat goes rancid. Rancid fat is what mold and mildew feed on, which is why a saddle oiled the old way comes out of a humid barn covered in it. Doc Bailey's conditions with lanolin from sheep's wool. 1. Put a couple of drops on the sponge. Tip the bottle over and back, scrape off the excess on the rim, and use the residue on the sponge.
2. Scrub the leather to clean it and open the pores.
